The Writing Prompt

What’s the most fun way to exercise?

If you’re trying to get into exercise, stop overthinking it. Most people fail before they even start because they think it has to be a full routine, a perfect plan, or some kind of transformation. It doesn’t. It just needs to be something you’ll actually do.

The easiest way to start is to keep it simple. That might mean signing up to a gym and just showing up once or twice a week. Not to follow a strict programme or push yourself too far, but just to get used to being there. Try different equipment, keep it relaxed, and don’t worry about doing everything “right”.Put on a playlist or a podcast and let that carry you through. You’ll find time passes quicker, and before you know it, you’ve done more than you expected. That’s how habits start not through intensity, but through repetition.

If you haven’t got access to a gym, it doesn’t matter. Put your trainers on and go outside. Walking around your local area, going to the shops, or running errands on foot all count as exercise. People tend to dismiss this because it feels too easy, but that’s exactly why it works. It’s low effort, repeatable, and easy to build into your day.

You don’t need a routine straight away. That comes later. What matters first is consistency. Ten minutes is better than nothing. A short walk is better than staying still. The goal isn’t perfection,  it’s simply showing up and doing something. There’s also a reason exercise is always recommended, and it’s not just about appearance. Regular movement is linked to improved cardiovascular health, better sleep, and reduced stress levels. According to the NHS, even moderate activity such as walking can lower the risk of conditions including heart disease and type 2 diabetes. It doesn’t need to be intense to be effective.

For some people, having something to track progress can help. Devices such as a Fitbit, Apple Watch, or Samsung Galaxy Watch can give you a rough idea of how active you are during the day. They’re not essential, but they can act as a quiet prompt or nurdge that makes you a bit more aware of your movement and encourages you to do a little more.

If you want a bit of structure without committing to a full routine, there are also simple apps that can help you get started. Couch to 5K (NHS) is designed for beginners and builds things up gradually. Nike Training Club offers short workouts you can do at home, while Apple Fitness or Samsung Health provide built-in tracking and guidance. Apps such as Strava or Map My Fitness (UA/ can also be useful if you prefer walking or cycling and want to keep track of your progress.

You don’t need to use everything. Pick one thing that works for you and keep it simple. Most people don’t struggle with exercise because they’re lazy. They struggle because they make it too complicated. Keep it straightforward, make it easy to return to, and let the habit build over time. You don’t need the perfect plan. You just need to start and keep going.
